Miles Davis reinvented jazz at least four times over five decades. Each phase produced records that producers sample differently: the hard bop quintet sessions for horn stabs and swing; the modal period (Kind of Blue) for harmonic space; the electric fusion years for rhythm density and texture. His Columbia catalog is the most sampled in jazz, and his CTI-era and later electric recordings remain underexplored.

Kind of Blue is the most referenced harmonically. In a Silent Way (1969) is a crucial ambient and experimental production reference. The hard bop quintet recordings on Prestige from 1955–1956 are sampled for their drum breaks.
The sessions from 1969–1975 — Bitches Brew, Jack Johnson, On the Corner — used multiple drummers, electric bass, electric piano, and wah-wah guitar in dense, layered arrangements that were essentially proto-hip hop in their rhythmic conception. These recordings were edited and assembled from improvised sessions by producer Teo Macero, creating structures that already behave like samples.
Miles Davis has over 200 releases on Discogs across Prestige, Blue Note, and Columbia. The Prestige catalog (1951–1955) contains the early hard bop sessions. The Columbia catalog spans from 1955 to 1975 and covers every major stylistic period. Blue Note has the early sessions.
