What is roots reggae?

Roots reggae is the spiritual and politically conscious strand of reggae music that developed in Jamaica in the late 1960s and reached its peak in the 1970s. Artists like Bob Marley, Burning Spear, Culture, and Bunny Wailer define the genre. It is characterised by heavy bass, one-drop rhythm, and Rastafarian lyrical themes.

What roots reggae labels are most valued by producers?

Studio One (Coxsone Dodd) is the most important label in Jamaican music history — it pressed the records that defined ska, rocksteady, and early reggae. Channel One, Trojan, and Joe Gibbs Productions are also essential. For sampling, look for early pressings on Jamaican labels rather than UK reissues — the original pressings have a different mastering.

What makes reggae rhythm sections unique for sampling?

Reggae bass is mixed louder than almost any other genre — it is the lead instrument. The "one-drop" drum pattern (kick on the third beat rather than the first) creates a completely different rhythmic feel from R&B or funk. This makes reggae bass lines and drum patterns distinctive and immediately recognisable when sampled.
